Introduction

This is a bit different than the other lists. Points are placed into baskets for (roughly) equivalent positions and points are accumulated over four years rather than just one

Automatically allocated points would not need to be signed off by anyone and would instead rely on the honor code. Allocatable points would be assigned by the person responsible for the activity (club president, band leader, athletic coach). The points committee would arbitrate any disputes that arise if, for example, a club president assigns himself all the points or if it seems the points are being manipulated in order to give someone an honor key. Comments would be welcomed by the Points Committee in interpreting people's contributions.

Student Government

The BoD is given 100 additional points to assign to non-BoD members, with a limit of 20 points per person.

Publications

  • The Tech is given 15 points per staff member (not including Editor/Co-Editors) to assign, separate from the points assigned to the editor/co-editors and the business manager, with a cap of 35 points per person.
  • The little t is given 50 points to assign.
  • The Big T is given 150 points to assign, separate from the points assigned to the editor/co-editors, with a cap of 35 points per person.
  • The CURJ is given 100 points to assign, with a cap of 35 points per person.
  • The Totem is given 100 points to assign, with a cap of 35 points per person.

Clubs and Organizations

Each ASCIT-recognized club is given 50 points to assign with a limit of 35/person, unless specifically noted below. Large clubs may be granted additional points by the BoD (or the ascit secretary or the points cmte... i have no idea which is better)

  • The Caltech Y is given 100 points to assign, with a cap of 20 points per person. We encourage recognition of Decompression and MAD Day participation, as well as the contribution of Excomm members.
  • The various Caltech a capella groups, bands, glee clubs, and chamber groups (music groups) are each given 5 points per contributor to assign.
  • The various drama productions are each given 15 points per contributor to assign.

Sports

Each team is given 5 points per team member to assign, with a cap of 20 points per member. Special recognition is given by ASCIT to team captains and additional points can be requested for those with special achievements.

Student House Officers

Each House is given 250 points to assign, with a cap of 35 points per person. Special note is already given to trained UCCs and Health Advocates by ASCIT.

Potential Problems

Too many keys given out... take these examples:

  • climbs soc team ladder
    • ascit soc team-- 10
    • house social d-- 25(ish)
    • ascit social d-- 35
    • total: 70
    • would have to participate in several other activities to get key
  • climbs boc ladder
    • boc member -- 25
    • boc chair -- 35
    • honor chair -- 50
    • gets key
  • climbs house ladder
    • low-tier house office 10
    • mid-tier house office 35
    • house president 50
    • needs 5 more points, probably gets key
  • the premed
    • arc member -- 5
    • sfc chair -- 25
    • arc chair -- 35
    • freshman admissions -- 10*3=30
    • ucc -- 10
    • health ad -- 10
    • gets key

Solution (ranked in order of my preferece)

  • Increase point value needed for key (150? 200?)
  • Have point value only nominate the person for a key; have a committee (ascit pres, ihc chair, dean) decide who actually gets the keys
  • Limit point accumulation to one year
    • Does this really make sense? It seems much more reasonable to reward someone for all four years of service; we don't want to be in a situation where someone overextends himself because he sees one year as his only year of having a chance to get a key. For example, a junior who finds himself in the position of house president or ascit vp and has no interest in ascit pres or ihc chair will recognize his junior year is the only possible chance to earn a key and will be pressured to join as many activities as possible.
