Funding
-Mary Dunlop requests funding for the Caltech Y and Alpine Club for a Wilderness first Aid. She reports that at Caltech there is no real way for students to get WFA training and basic first aid is less useful in Wilderness situations. They received MHF funding 2 years ago and had a huge response (80 applicants for 30 spots). Professionals come in to teach the class and the participants enjoyed it. They want to try it again to allow new people to take the class. MHF doesn’t fund repeat events so it was turned down by them. They are requesting money from a variety of sources. They have $500 from GSC and are asking us for $250. The cost for the class would be $200 on your own. They are trying to keep it to $53 per student. 4 undergrads took it last time in addition to 2 professors and a bunch of grad students. Approved.
Student Center
-Mike Woods informed us (supposedly from John Hall) that the Rosen donation for the student center was redirected to research funds and so the student center project was canceled. This will not encourage potential donors for other student projects (ie north houses). The design process was drawing so far back on quality that the donor no longer thought that the plans met the original intention. Jean Lou is starting to look at what’s happening to student infrastructure in general. He wants to figure out what the best thing to do is. He is forming a committee to look into this. Signups for the student center committee will be transferred to this new committee. Interviews will be next Wednesday at 10:30pm at SFL.
