Hello World

Letting people you exist.

Websites

Websites are useful for establishing a campus and community presence, especially if you do not hold highly publicized events on a regular basis.

Hosting

Starting in the spring of 2005, ASCIT will begin providing free hosting on clubs.caltech.edu for any registered club. Initial quota is set at 150MB. More space is can be acquired on a case-by-case basis. club.caltech.edu users can run php scripts and cgi programs. A database engine is also available. ASCIT offers vritual hosting, which enables you to have an address like clubname.caltech.edu or clubname.org instead of clubs.caltech.edu/~clubname. The clubs.caltech.edu server is the preferred way of hosting club websites.

UGCS and ITS both provide free web hosting - refer to the appropriate pages for account information and instructions. Both services require you to prepare the documents on your own computer, then upload them via SCP or SFTP. Quotas are 32 MB for UGCS and 120MB for ITS (important if you plan to offer large files such as videos). ITS administrators are more responsive to new account requests and questions, because they get paid. Additionally, ITS offers virtual hosting, which enables you to have an address like clubname.caltech.edu or clubname.org, instead of its.caltech.edu/~clubname.

Note if you decide to use any of these services, the content of your website must adhere to Caltech policies. If for some reason it does not, you will need to seek outside hosting or run your own server.

Listings

Adding club contact information to common listings makes it easier for people to find your club. This includes people who want to give you money and let you participate in multi-club events.

Caltech.edu

The caltech.edu Club Listings can be accessed by selecting the "Studying at Caltech">"Extracurriculars" menu options. You must have a club website to be included on this list. Furthermore, you must have your club listed here to be eligible for GSC funding.

little t

The little t is a Caltech "guidebook" published annually by the undergraduate student government (ASCIT). It contains a section about on-campus clubs and organizations. Editing is done over the summer and a print copy is distributed during Fall term. Usually the editors will put out a call for information updates and submissions around June, after publications appointments.

Listings consist of a short description and a contact email.

Technique

The Technique is published annually by the graduate student council (GSC), and is a lot like the little t, except that it is more informative about issues relating to staying alive. Production of the print copy is done during the summer, and a website version is available year-round.

Listings consist of a short description and a contact email.

Club Fairs

There's probably no better way to sucker new students into joining your organization, or at least the mailing list. The Fall Club Fair is held on the Saturday before classes start (i.e. late September), and in recent years, there has been one unified fair for graduates and undergraduates. The Spring Club Fair is part of the undergraduate Prefrosh Weekend in early April, and as such, is aimed specifically at the UG population.

Both fairs are run by Campus Life. Established clubs should receive information from them about 1 month in advance.
