Honor Keys

Honor Keys

Created in 1921 with the intention of providing "appropriate recognition to those students who have contributed most to the success of student activities," (1921 Big T) Honor Keys disappeared slowly, being absent from campus by no later than 1970. The purpose was to encourage well-roundedness in contributions, with a balance usually achieved between participation in sports and campus politics or club service.

The Honor Point Committee evaluated Honor Key applications and consisted of the ASCIT VP and the two Directors At-Large.

Requirements to earn a Key changed over the years, but they will be restored off of the only complete list of points that I have access to, the 1957 little t (Thanks to Jim Workman '57). In that year (and period, according to the Tech), 50 points earned a student an Honor Certificate, while 100 points earned an Honor Key. Keys were around 1-2 inches long and could be hung on a chain.

To-Do

  • Organize Honor Point Committee (Honor Chair, FD@L and UD@L) Should be done already now that Honor Chair in place
  • Translate 1957 Point List to Today's Caltech
    • Meet with the following people:
      • Deans
      • Athena Castro, Caltech Y Director
      • Candice Rypisi, Current SFP (Student and Faculty Programs) Director
      • Carolyn Ash, Previous SFP Director
      • President Chameau (?)
    • Meet with alumni to take feedback on changes
      • Find out if there was a formal 'Application'
      • Compile historical lists of previous Techers earning keys
  • Order Keys (no idea where they could be found)
  • Announce Honor Keys
  • Maybe ask for Honor Point applications from people for third term next year

Suggestions for 2007-08 Honor Point List

Please be sure to justify in the discussions page.
Thanks,

1957 Honor Key Introduction

Each year honor keys are awarded by the ASCIT to a group of men in recognition of their participation in extra-curricular activities. These keys are given to men who have demonstrated their willingness not merely to "join," but to those who have taken part actively in campus organizations. In establishing the point system set forth on the following pages, special emphasis is places on well-roundedness rather than on work in any one field of activity.

The Honor Point Committee has been set up to review the application of prospective recipients. "It is composed of three members: The vice-president of the corporation, who is chairman of the group, and the two Representatives-at-Large." Any person with 50 or more honor points should submit his application to any Board member.

After reviewing each case, the Committee will award keys to men with 100 or more points, and certificates to men with 50 or more points. However, in the former case, a minimum of 50 non-athletic points is required, and in the latter, 20 non-athletic points.

The period over which points may be tabulated is from the beginning of the third term of one scholastic year to the end of the second term of the succeeding year. Freshmen are allowed only the first two terms to compile honor points, and seniors are permitted to use the last four terms and earn 130 points. Applications are turned in at the conclusion of the second term, and the certificates and keys are awarded at the Awards Assembly late in the term term. No person can receive more than one key, and each time a man receives the award the year is engraved on the back of the Honor Key.

The Honor Point list follows and is criterion used in awarding Honor Points. It must be emphasized, however, that the values are merely recommendations, and that a person may ask for more points for doing an exceptional job, or assuming more than the normal amount of responsibility. Similarly, the Honor Point Committee may assign fewer points to a particular job if it deems it necessary. Finally, many other jobs may be used in applying for keys or certificates, as new ones are created each year.
